What size bed is right for you?

If you're like most people, you probably spend about one-third of your life in bed. That's a lot of time. And the size of bed you choose can have a huge impact on your sleep, your health, and your overall well-being.

Size Matters

One study found that people who slept on a full-size bed were 20 percent more likely to suffer from back pain than those who slept on a queen-size or king-size bed. Another study showed that couples who slept in separate beds were 10 percent more likely to get divorced. Whether you're single or a couple, getting a larger bed can make a big difference in your quality of life.

Common Bed Sizes

Twin — The Twin size, at 39 inches wide by 75 inches long has traditionally been a popular size for children's beds. A twin bed will fit in the smallest rooms, and is thus a great option for apartments and college dorms. In all but the smallest living spaces, however, most people would prefer to opt for a larger bed.

Full — Full size beds range from 54 inches wide by 74 inches long to 54 inches wide by 80 inches long. They are larger than twin beds, but not as roomy as queen or king sizes. Full size beds have traditionally been the most common choice for older children and single adults, but increasingly many people are turning to larger sizes when they choose to upgrade their bed.

Queen — Queen beds measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, and have long been the most common choice for couples. Queen sized mattresses are approximately as wide as two twin mattresses placed side by side, and are now a popular choice for older children and single adults living in homes with smaller bedrooms. Queen beds allow you to enjoy the benefits that a large bed can provide without giving up too much of your precious bedroom square footage to a bed. Increasingly, however, many couples are upgrading to king sized beds.

King — King beds are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. Experiencing a surge in popularity, king-sized beds offer plenty of room for anyone, couples included, to sleep comfortably. King beds offer many advantages: they maximize sleeping space and provide adequate room for two people to sleep comfortably without disturbing each other. The extra space created by a king-sized mattress also allows you to spread out more and get a good night's rest without worrying about feeling cramped or having to toss and turn to find a comfortable position.
